Rhyming Concentration

Rhyming is one of the best ways students will learn to read. Most rhyming words will have a pattern that's easy to notice and use. Students love to hear rhyming stories or poems. They love to chant them too. Once students begin learning to rhyme, they usually get it and are successful with reading and writing the words.

 FREE Rhyming Center
I have a FREE Rhyming Concentration game that will get your students off in the right direction. This pack has 24 pairs of cards to match short vowel words. Each card has a picture to go along with each word. Use the cards to play a game of Concentration, Go Fish, or at a reading center. Great for small group or an assessment too!

Have you tried Rhyming Strips? These are Fun and Engaging strips that are intended to get your students to read and rhyme. A total of 70 strips included. All Strips use CVC Short Vowel Words. Students find the word that rhymes with the picture.

CVC Rhyming Worksheets has 36 pages to practice rhyming. There are 5 pages for each vowel (a,e,i,o,u) and 11 pages of mixed vowels to use for assessments.

Friendly Letter Writing - FREEBIE

For every grade I taught, the students really like Friendly Letter Writing. I love Friendly Letter time because the students get some extra writing in. Students pick up the Friendly Letter Writing format easily but they do have a hard time remembering where the commas go. When I teach friendly letters, I have the students write letters to each other in the classroom. Students are THRILLED when they get a letter from a classmate. I make sure to assign each person in the class someone to write to so everyone receives a letter. I make sure to read their letters too so nothing negative is said to anyone. Once students understand the Friendly Letter Format, I assign the FREE assignment below. I use this activity every year with my students. Students need to bring in 3-5 addresses from family members, envelopes, and stamps. We write the letters in class, address the envelopes, put a stamp on it, and I mail them from school. A great way to practice addressing an envelope and to practice Friendly Letter Writing Format.
 FREE Friendly Letter Writing Freebie

This Free Friendly Letter Writing Assignment includes:
A sample letter to send home to parents requesting materials, a few friendly letter templates, and a 6-trait writing checklist. The students write the letters to family members. Some of them even receive letters back from family members!

I usually use this assignment around Christmas time or Valentine's Day but any time of the year is fine. Try to keep Friendly Letter Writing going all year by hooking with another classroom in the school to exchange letters.

Making Connections

Did you know that when we make connections, we remember more and can recall information easily?  Students who make connections while reading are better at understanding the text they are reading. It's important for students to draw on their own prior knowledge and experiences to connect with the text they are reading. When students are making connections, they are more engaged in their reading experience. Click the picture below to download this FREE reading poster on Making Connections.
 FREE Making Connections Poster
Teachers need to model for their students how to make connections so they will begin to make personal connections to the text on their own. Everytime I read a story with the students I tell them a connection I have with it and I use something from the story that I can connect in my own personal life. After we read a story, I always ask the students if there is anything in the story we just read that we can connect to another story we read earlier that year.

I have created a poster to help students remember how to make connections. This FREE download has a poster that you may post in your classroom to share and remind students about how we make connections when reading. It also has a worksheet to write and draw their connections. Just click the picture at the top to download this free poster.

FREE Money Posters

Who are the people on our coins and bills? When I was teaching our money unit, a student asked me about the people on the coins. I have to admit I didn't know much. I had to look up to see who was on the dime! I decided to create a poster highlighting the people on our coins and dollar bills. There are 2 posters. Each poster displays a picture of each coin or bill (front and back) plus some information about the people on each one. When I showed it to my 3rd graders, they were really interested in it! So I thought your students would like it too. I'm sharing it here today with you. You can hang in your classroom or on a bulletin board. Kids will love the facts! It's a great way to learn about our Presidents and the important people who are on the United States coins and bills. Just click any picture below to download it. You can download it at my TPT store.
